Near the Arenal Volcano lies the magnificent La Fortuna Waterfall. Delight in swimming at the base of the waterfall on an exciting hiking excursion with an experienced guide.
Begin with a hotel pickup and a beautiful drive through the expansive Costa Rican scenery. While learning some history of the area and about the indigenous tribes of the region, you will see rural countryside, lush green hills and of course the active Arenal Volcano. This won’t be the only volcano you drive by, with the nearby Cerro Chato Volcano and stunning crater lake.
Deep in the Costa Rican rainforest, you will begin with a stop at a scenic garden restaurant. With restrooms services and a full menu, you may feel compelled to try out some traditional Costa Rican dishes, with options for meat eaters and vegetarians alike.
Depending on the season, you may see amazing flora and fauna, including orchids, ferns, and unique butterflies and hummingbirds. With something interesting to look at every which way, this stop is sure to take your breath away.
After the drive and pleasant break, it’s time to start stepping — literally. With almost 500 steps, there’s a thrilling staircase deep into the canyon that takes you by lush green hills and an amazing view. On the way down, enjoy the sounds of the waterfalls and the incredible scenery to a heavenly paradise.
As you make your way, try not to be daunted by the thought of the walk back up and be sure you’re physically ready for that later in the day. Thankfully, there are helpful breaks built into the stairway with places to stop and rest along the way. While sitting at these welcomed breaks, it’s a great time for photos and also to to keep an eye out for Costa Rican wildlife like sloths, monkeys and plenty of colorful birds.
When you have finally reached the bottom of the canyon, you will head to the tremendous falls off of the Tenorio River. The waterfall is 250 feet down into the pool where you will be. The massive presence of this waterfall leads to cool, brisk waters for the more adventurous swimmers to enjoy. Should you wish for a more relaxing waterfall pool experience, you can find tranquil spots for a refreshing splash around. Keep your eyes peeled for unintrusive small tropical fish swimming right along with you, reminding you that you are visiting this natural wonder where life is thriving everywhere.
Besides swimming, you can also find some remote spots along the water to really soak in the amazing scenery. Relaxing in nature next, surrounded by the natural beauty of Costa Rica, is sure to be a memory you won’t soon forget. With little picnic spots and nature trails to explore, you’ll be able to walk along where the water flows and check out the sights, sounds and amazing feeling of being in this spectacular place.
After you are fully relaxed and feeling great in the beautiful Costa Rican paradise, it will be time to stretch those legs and begin the hike back up. Remember, there are plenty of places to stop along the way and continue to soak up nature. It’s not a sprint up to the top, and there’s plenty of time to stop and smell the flowers, bird watch or look for other wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may see some exotic butterflies at some of the stops, and you can watch as they enjoy their little piece of paradise. At the top, everyone will be treated to tropical Costa Rican fruit. While waiting for the whole group to ascend the stairs, you will have time to look back on an amazing day made of once-in-a-lifetime memories in this gorgeous waterfall setting.
The La Fortuna waterfall trek is an amazing bucket list experience that you’ll surely want to add to your Costa Rica itinerary.

We were so happy with this tour. We saw a lot of animals in the jungle. Everyone was nice and the waterfall was great!
Be prepared for 500 steps! It was rainy so we didn’t swim while we were there, but it's really a beautiful location and the waterfall is incredible. The guides were very friendly.
This hike is amazing, beautiful waterfall and well maintained paths.. I recommend it 100%!!
Wonderful tour. My wife is 60 and I’m 59 and we tackled the steps!!. We swam in the water around the waterfall. It was a little cold, but refreshing. Lots of large boulders to get from you from the steps to the water.

Beautiful and powerful waterfall. Worth the 500 steps. Like most everything we experienced in Costa Rica the staff was friendly and professional.
We went first thing in the morning and it was a good decision. The steps worried me but there are many resting stops along the way and we survived lol, we are coming back for sure!
