Inshore, the waters are teeming with prized fish species such as Roosterfish, Snappers, and Groupers, providing an exciting challenge for those seeking a memorable catch. Offshore, the Pacific beckons with offerings that include Billfish, Sailfish, Marlin, and Dorado, which dominate the waters during this time of year.

Early October Fishing Weather ☔🌩️💦

During the month of October in Los Suenos, Costa Rica, anglers should be prepared for the wettest conditions of the year. While the green season officially ends in mid-December, the rains start to significantly taper off by the second week of November. This means that October marks the last full month of what we truly consider the rainy season in Costa Rica. Both on land and offshore, rain showers are common and often powerful, so it is essential to come prepared with appropriate rain gear. On land, average temperatures range from 81°F-90°F, making for a warm and humid environment.

Both inshore and offshore on the Pacific Ocean, temperatures remain relatively stable, ranging from about 79-84°F. When planning a fishing trip during October, it’s a good idea to select a charter boat with a covered seating area and a comfortable, air-conditioned cabin so you can escape the rain showers and humidity as needed. This month falls within the peak season for these colorful fish, which spans from late May through November in Costa Rica. Mahi mahi are particularly fond of rainier conditions, making October an ideal time to target them. They’re drawn to floating debris and seaweed that accumulate after heavy rainfalls, as these provide shelter and a potential food source. October is one of the few months where dorado range heavily between inshore and offshore waters. Anglers targeting dorado can employ a variety of methods, such as trolling with lures or live bait, as well as casting poppers or jigs near flotsam. These fish are known for their acrobatic leaps and fierce fights, making for an exhilarating catch. They are also known for their delicious, rich flavor that is both mild and sweet, and their dense but flaky texture. Dorado pairs perfectly with citrus, making it an awesome choice for ceviche.

Inshore Bites 🐠🍣⛵

Inshore fishing in Los Suenos is all about snapper during the month of October. This is peak season for snapper, which is at its highest density from July through December. Much like mahi, snapper are known to thrive in green season’s rainier conditions. The increased rainfall leads to higher levels of nutrients and runoff, attracting the smaller baitfish that snapper feed on. Anglers can find success targeting snapper near rocky outcroppings and reefs using a variety of techniques such as live bait, artificial lures, or bottom fishing with fresh bait. These fish are highly prized for both their delicious flavor and firm texture. Snapper is perfect for grilling or pan-searing, but also makes a mouthwatering ceviche. October offers fantastic opportunities inshore to reel them in.
