Anglers can expect to catch smaller Tuna, Snapper and Roosterfish inshore while offshore fishing will yield more Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and bigger Yellowfin Tuna. The weather in Los Suenos Costa Rica during the month of July is typically warm and humid. On land, the average temperature is around 86°F, with occasional showers that can last for a few hours. Inshore, the temperature is usually a bit cooler than on the land, averaging around 84°F, but the humidity can make it feel warmer. Offshore, the sea temperature is around 77°F, making it the perfect temperature for a variety of fish. As we are well into the rainy season now, the area is experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall, with an expected accumulative average of around 10 inches throughout the month. The rain usually falls in short bursts, and usually happens during the afternoon or evening, though we can see some rain now in the early mornings as we head away from land. Despite the rain, the fishing conditions remain awesome and we’re having big successes out on the water.
During the second half of July, offshore fishing out of Los Suenos continues to be excellent, with a variety of fish available. Anglers can expect to catch Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dorado (Mahi).
Yellowfin Tuna is particularly abundant during this time and can be found in large numbers. These fish are highly prized for their speed, fighting spirit and delicious taste. When targeting Tuna, we’ve been using a variety of methods, including live bait, artificial lures, plugs, and casting with poppers or jigs. Marlin and Sailfish will also take artificial lures, but they are more likely to be caught by trolling with live bait. The offshore fishing in Los Suenos during this time of year is ideal for those looking for some adrenaline-pumping action.
Inshore in Los Suenos during mid-late July offers anglers the opportunity to enjoy some outstanding fishing. Roosterfish, Snapper, and Jacks are commonly caught in the inshore waters, along with Wahoo, Grouper, Bonita and a whole variety of smaller table fish. Roosterfish, in particular, can be quite abundant this time of year and are known for their distinctive appearance and fighting abilities. Slow trolling with live bait is the most effective way to catch Roosterfish, though we do have success with bottom fishing and surface casting for Roosters. Snapper can also be caught using live bait. Anglers targeting Jacks should use fast-moving lures such as poppers or jigs for a fun bit of catch and release. The inshore fishing in Los Suenos during the second half of July is perfect for anglers looking for some action close to shore and the chance to catch some delicious fish for dinner.
