Welcome to the second half of November fishing report from Los Suenos Marina! As we approach the end of the month, the fishing action continues to be off the charts while the rain has broken and we’re seeing increasingly sunny days. Both inshore and offshore, anglers are enjoying a variety of exciting opportunities. Inshore, we are seeing incredible numbers of Roosterfish, Snapper, and Snook, while offshore, Mahi Mahi, Blue Marlin, and Sailfish are stealing the show. Whether you prefer the adrenaline rush of battling these majestic creatures offshore or the tough challenge of inshore fishing, November is proving to be a prime time for anglers out of Los Suenos, Costa Rica.
During the second half of November in Los Suenos, the weather continues to transition and we are seeing green season near its end, giving way to the sunny skies of high season. On land, the average temperatures range between 82-90°F. Over the next few weeks, the rains will taper off completely and high season will begin.
Inshore, the water temperatures remain warm, averaging around 80°F. With the decrease in rainfall, the water clarity has improved significantly, making it an ideal time for inshore fishing. Anglers can expect calm seas and sunny skies as we move from the end of November into early December, providing excellent visibility and comfortable conditions for fishing.
Offshore, is much of the same, with the water temperatures hitting the same averages that we’re finding inshore. We’re seeing great weather for deep-sea fishing and it’s only getting better as the days go by. The ocean is calm and flat.
Offshore fishing for Sailfish in Los Suenos is an absolute thrill that keeps anglers coming back for more. While Sailfish can be found throughout the year, their peak season runs from December to March. As November comes to a close, we are seeing an upward spike in their numbers. These magnificent creatures, known for their acrobatic displays and incredible speed, are a sight to behold. With an average size ranging from 80 to 120 pounds, and occasionally reaching up to 200 pounds, these trophy fish provide an exhilarating challenge for even the most experienced anglers. Sailfish are highly sought after for their beautiful colors, impressive size, and the epic battles they engage in once hooked.
This second half of November is also the last full month of peak season for Dorado (Mahi Mahi). If you’ve never caught one of these delicious fish, now’s the time to get in on the action. Dorado are beautiful, ray-finned fish with gorgeous iridescent coloring and a distinctive blunt head, but don’t let their striking appearance fool you. Dorado are incredibly fast and put up a serious fight when hooked. Costa Rica is lucky enough to have Dorado present year round, but May through the end of November sees the highest density. As surface hunters, they prefer the rainy season, where they can capitalize on the conditions to hunt for prey.
When it comes to inshore fishing in Los Suenos, targeting Roosterfish is an absolute must. While these powerful and majestic creatures can be found year-round, their peak season extends from November to March. Found along the rocky shores and nearshore reefs, Roosterfish provide an exciting challenge for anglers. On average, Roosterfish range from 20-60 pounds, with some reaching up to 100 pounds. These fish are highly prized by anglers not only for their impressive size but also for their distinctive appearance, with their prominent crests that resemble a rooster's comb. To entice these predators, a variety of techniques are used including trolling with live bait such as mullet or sardines, as well as casting topwater lures, poppers, and jigs. The heart-pounding strikes and fierce fights that Roosterfish offer make them a favorite target for anglers.
