Getting to Monteverde from San Jose

You can travel from San Jose to Monteverde by private car (rental or uber), Costa Rica public transportation, or a shared shuttle service. Taking the bus in Costa Rica is an economical option and takes about four and a half hours. Booking a shared shuttle service is another option and reduces the trip to about three and a half hours.

Driving to the Monteverde Cloud Forest in a rental car allows you to stop at scenic spots along the way. The trip takes about three hours. If you choose to drive to Monteverde, it is important to note that some of the Monteverde roads are unpaved.

Be sure to check the Costa Rica bus schedule to plan accordingly when making your travel plans to visit the Monteverde area.
