Surfing in Jaco Beach (Playa Jaco)
With some of the best beaches on the planet, the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is lined with gorgeous, long shores perfect for surfing. And Jaco Beach (or Playa Jaco in Spanish) is a surfing oasis for both experts and beginners. No wonder some of the most prestigious surf competitions are held here every year.
This is one of many reasons why natives and tourists love Playa Jaco. The waves are gentle enough for novice surfers but are consistent enough that intermediates surfers can enjoy them as well. It also stretches about a mile and a half, so there's room for everyone.
Another reason surfers love Playa Jaco is that there's a nice mix of left, right, and A-frame breaks, so you'll be able to pop up no matter which side you're more comfortable on.
Jaco Beach is also located near some of Costa Rica's other popular surf destinations, so you can spend the entire day catching its solid waves or warm-up here to explore some of its neighboring beaches later as well.
Weather in Playa Jaco
The weather is beautiful all year round, with December to April being the best times to try your hand at this exciting sport. If you're daring, high tides in May and November create giant adrenaline-inducing waves that can be as tall as you!
The rush that comes with getting up on that surfboard is unrivaled, and some even find it addicting. Being carried along by a smooth wave is something you have to experience for yourself. Dreamy right?
To Take Surf Lessons or Wing It?
While you can try surfing yourself, it can be a lot less frustrating and much safer to book a lesson with an instructor. But don't be afraid if it seems intimidating. Surf instructors in the area have years of experience and know the beach and its environment like the back of their hands. What to Bring When Surfing in Playa Jaco
You won't have to bring any equipment with you (flying with a surfboard is never fun). Just make sure you have sport sunscreen, athletic swimwear, sunglasses, a towel, and a rash guard. Most boards can be rented at great prices.
Transportation and water are included with most lessons, so all you have to focus on is catching those waves.
Getting to Playa Jaco
Playa Jaco is only around an hour and a half drive from San Jose (the capital city of Costa Rica), where you'll most likely land when you arrive. It's the closest beach destination to the airport, so you won't have to sit around too long to visit the ocean. You can make a weekend trip out of the exciting beach town or stay around for your entire vacation.
